The Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) is a medium-sized bird of prey that is native to Africa and the Middle East. This species is also known as the Pharaoh’s chicken due to its association with ancient Egyptian culture.

Physical Characteristics: The Egyptian vulture is a striking bird with a wingspan of around 5 feet and a body length of about 27 inches. It has a distinctive yellow face, black tipped beak and crown of white head feathers. They are predominantly white, with black feathers along their wingtips and a long, diamond shaped tail. There is little difference between males and females, except females are up to 1/3 larger in size and weight.

Habitat: The Egyptian vulture is found in a variety of habitats including grasslands, deserts, savannahs, and mountain areas. It is a highly adaptable bird that can thrive in many different environments, but is most commonly found in arid regions.

Diet: The Egyptian vulture is a scavenger that feeds on carrion but will sometimes hunt small animals. They will eat eggs and are one of the few bird species known to use tools to help them do this. They use small stones as hammers to help crack open large eggs and pick up and drop smaller eggs to get to the yolk inside.

Behavior: The Egyptian vulture is mainly a solitary bird that spends much of its time on the ground, searching for food. Outside of the breeding season, they will form large roosts at night, but it is not particularly territorial. This bird is also known for its distinctive courtship displays, which involve soaring, diving, and calling to attract a mate.

Conservation Status: The Egyptian vulture is considered to be Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as populations of this bird have declined in some areas due to habitat loss, persecution, and accidental poisoning from eating poisoned bait intended for other animals. What they do

Egyptian vultures are also known for their remarkable ability to fly great distances and often undertake long migration journeys between their breeding and wintering grounds. Nests, eggs and young

The Egyptian vulture typically builds of sticks, feathers, and other materials and are lined with soft materials such as grass. The birds will often reuse their nests year after year.

Eggs: The Egyptian vulture typically lays 1-3 eggs. The eggs are oval in shape and are creamy in color, with a speckled brown pattern. Both parents incubate the eggs for approximately 40-45 days, and take turns feeding the young.

Young: When the eggs hatch, the young are covered in orange-buff down, with blue faces. The parents feed the young with regurgitated food and care for them until they are ready to leave the nest, which typically occurs at around 60-70 days after hatching.

Overall, the Egyptian vulture is a highly successful breeder, with a high rate of reproductive success in most areas. However, habitat loss and human disturbance can impact the success of this species, so it is important to protect and conserve their habitats.

 

 

Why they need our help

Egyptian vultures need our help because their populations are declining due to several factors, including habitat loss, persecution, and accidental poisoning.

Habitat loss: The destruction of natural habitats for agriculture, urbanization, and other human activities has resulted in a reduction of available habitats for Egyptian vultures. This has resulted in a decline in their population numbers.

Electrocution: As a migratory bird, Egyptian vultures face an increased risk of electrocution on powerlines. Infrastructure planning does not take into account the ecological impacts of powelines along much of their migratory route. Collisions with powerlines are one of the biggest threats Egyptian vultures face in Europe.

Accidental poisoning: Egyptian vultures are at risk of accidental poisoning from consuming poisoned bait intended for other animals, or from consuming poisoned carcasses. This type of poisoning can have a significant impact on the population numbers of this species.

It is important to protect and conserve the habitats of the Egyptian vulture and to educate people about the importance of this species to our ecosystem. Conservation efforts, such as habitat restoration, the creation of protected areas, and the implementation of measures to prevent accidental poisoning, are essential for the survival of this species.
