What they do

In the wild, Andean condors spend much of their time soaring on thermals in search of carrion, which is their primary source of food. They use their keen eyesight to locate dead animals and then use their large beaks to tear off pieces of flesh. Andean condors are known to fly long distances in search of food. They are also known for their courtship rituals, which involve intricate displays of flight, calling, and bonding behaviors.

Andean condors are social animals and form communal roosts, where they will sleep and rest. They are also known for their long lifespan and slow rate of reproduction, as they do not reach sexual maturity until they are around 8 years old and only lay one egg every two to three years.

It has a bald head and neck, which are pinkish-grey in colour, and its beak is large, hooked, and grey. Juvenile birds have a brownish-grey plumage with a grey-coloured head and neck.

Head: The Andean condor’s head is large, bald, and wrinkled, with a large, hooked beak that is well adapted for tearing into tough flesh. Males have dark brown eyes and females’ are red and its eyelids have a thick layer of skin that protects them from the strong winds encountered at high altitudes.

Wings: The Andean condor’s wings are broad, rounded, and have a distinctive white patch on the underside of the primary feathers. Its wingspan is one of the largest of any bird species, which allows it to soar for long periods without flapping its wings.

Tail: The Andean condor has a short, wedge-shaped tail that it uses for steering and balance while flying.

Legs: The Andean condor’s legs are strong and partially covered in feathers. Its feet are equipped with rough scales that help it grip onto slippery surfaces. Andean condors defaecate on their own legs as a means of cooling down – a behaviour known as urohydrosis. This behaviour is also thought to have a hygienic purpose, as the faeces can help remove any parasites that may have attached themselves to the bird’s skin or feathers.

Nest, eggs and young

Andean condors are monogamous and typically form long-term breeding pairs. They typically lay one egg every two to three years and both parents participate in incubation and care of the young.

Nesting: Andean condors nest in caves or on cliff ledges, often at high elevations in the Andes Mountains. They will defend their nest site fiercely, but once the young have fledged, the pair will move on to establish a new territory.

Eggs: Andean condors lay a single white egg which is incubated by both parents for approximately 60 days.

Young: The hatchling is covered in down and has a short, stubby beak. Both parents feed the chick by regurgitation, providing it with a nutritious mixture of partially digested food and stomach fluids. The young will fledge from the nest after approximately six months, but will continue to be fed by the parents for several months thereafter.

    • Poisoning: The Andean condor is vulnerable to poisoning from eating the remains of animals that have been poisoned by humans, either intentionally or as a result of accidental exposure to toxic substances.
    • Hunting: Andean condors are sometimes hunted for their feathers, which are used in traditional South American ceremonies and are considered to have spiritual significance.
    • Lead poisoning: The Andean condor is vulnerable to lead poisoning from ingesting lead shot in the remains of hunted animals.
    • Electrocution: The Andean condor’s large wingspan makes it vulnerable to electrocution when it comes into contact with power lines.
